The capital of Navarre and heart of the Basque Country, Pamplona is a vibrant city with a long history. It is the first city that you will come to on the Camino and the way’s entry into the city over the 12thc stone bridge of La Magdalena is a sign of the delights to come. From here you pass through the old city walls and 15thc ‘Gate of France’ which provides an exciting entrance into Pamplona as you follow through the narrow streets alive with cafes and shops. Sights in the City include the Cathedral of Santa Maria, Town Hall ( pictured) Plaza Del Castillo and the Cafe Iruna – an art Deco masterpiece and hangout of Hemingway. The Palace of Navarre and Museum of Navarre will appeal to those wanting a cultural exposure whilst for others just strolling the busy streets will provide plenty of distractions.

In recent times the city  has perhaps become best known as the site of the San Fermin festival each July and the running of the Bulls ( usually 6-14 July) which attracts huge numbers of tourists. Pilgrims are best avoiding this time as hotel prices triple and can be hard to come by.
