The UCI Road World Championships take place in Ponferrada between the 21-28 September 2014. This is having an effect on accommodation in and around Ponferrada, from Leon to Vega de Valcarce. As there is a weekend on either side of the race dates this means that the dates affected are from the 19th – 30th September.
What does this mean if you are planning to walk the Camino in September 2014? You should be aware of your start date so that you do not reach the affected areas between the 19-30th September. If you are walking the traditional stages of around 25 km per day you should avoid starting (from St Jean Pied de Port or Roncesvalles) between the 18th August – 7th September. If you are starting the Camino before or after those dates then you will avoid the race. Be aware that during those dates accommodation in that area is either not available, triple the usual price or in some cases miles off the Camino.
For those who want to start from Leon during those dates it is best to check with your travel agent on the availability of accommodation before you commit to any flights or other travel plans.
Update January 2014:
The black out dates for accommodation are now extended as they are being affected from the week before the race until the weekend after – 12- 30th of September. This means that if you are planning to walk the full length of the Camino you should try to avoid starting between 11 August – 7th September in order to avoid the being in the areas affected during the race period.
